The question of whether a multiplayer title on Nintendo Switch is Joy-Con-only has been something of a hot issue since the console launched to rapturous applause last year.
Nintendo were keen to stress the ease of multiplayer interaction which the Switch’s twin Joy-Con controllers offered as standard. However, some users have been unimpressed with the ease and comfort of using them.
To sidestep the issue, many gamers have shelled out on the more luxurious Pro Controllers for easier grip and control. This includes use in multiplayer games, so many Switch fans want to know whether the latest Mario Party game will support use of these higher grade controllers.

The game does not support the use of Pro Controllers or two Joy-Cons paired using the Grip controller. The only way to play the game is by using a single Joy-Con.
This makes sense in a lot of ways. The title is mostly geared towards multiplayer gaming and Nintendo might well want to encourage its users to take advantage of their console’s lightweight portable design for gaming on the go. (Something that’s a little harder to achieve with the larger Pro Controllers.)

Yes, the game does provide single player options. You can play the online Mario-thon mode as a single player against online opponents. (Although, as of September, this requires a Switch Online subscription.)
It is also possible to play the standard Party Mode against CPU opponents, although whether that provides a significant challenge will likely depend on how much time you’ve already invested in learning how the game works.
