KT Tunstall says she is not ‘locked down straight’

Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall has opened up about her sexuality, saying that she has had lesbian relationships with women and that she is not “locked-down straight.”
KT Tunstall said in an interview with DIVA Magazine that she studied at the Scottish Youth Theatre in Glasgow, where it was “weird if you didn’t get off with everybody.”

She said that it was “more unusual to be straight” at the youth theatre, and that she has “had relationships with girls.”
“I do connect with being heterosexual now but women are able to captivate in a different way from men,” she added.
Lesbian following
This is not the first time KT Tunstall has opened up about her sexuality. In 2016, in an interview with Pride Source, she addressed rumours that she was a lesbian.
In the interview, she said kissing girls was “a really important part of my formative years.”
She also said that there is “less angst” in the new generation of young people around sexuality.
“It feels like there are less and less shackles on young people to adhere to old norms and that inspires me just to be brave in everyday life and to honor how confident and self-assured they are becoming at a much younger age than I did.”

Tunstall said her lesbian experiences were not “a phase,” and to call it such would be “disrespectful.”
“It was a part of life. It was learning about love and learning about lust and desire and sexuality and becoming an adult and experiencing people.”
Tunstall also expressed joy at seeing gender fluidity becoming more common, saying it was “exciting.” She said that she might have leaned more into it if she was 17 or 18 today.

‘Cruel and misguided society’
Tunstall wrote an open letter to the LGBT+ community for Billboard earlier this year for Gay Pride Month.
“I want to tell you that I truly believe a day will come when we human beings look back at this time and laugh through the sadness at how ridiculous and cruel and misguided society could be towards people within your community,” she said.
“I’m sorry it can hurt so bad.”
“Please know that so many of us wish to hold you as high as we can, cheer wildly for you, and love you. There is nothing else like you. You are incredible,” she added.
Tunstall famously has a big following in the LGBT+ community, particularly among lesbians. She addressed the adoration of lesbian fans in 2006, saying there is always a “gay crowed up the front at my gigs.”
She released her sixth studio album, WAX, last month.
