Doctor Who: Fans search for meaning behind Jodie Whittaker’s ‘gay scarf’
Doctor Who fans are speculating about the hidden gay message behind a rainbow scarf worn by Jodie Whittaker’s character in an image promoting the show’s New Year’s Special.
The Doctor Who Official Twitter account posted a photo of the title character, played by Whittaker, donning a bright rainbow scarf on Monday (November 26).
“More Details Revealed – As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history,” it said.
“As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?
Meanwhile, the Doctor Who on BBC America Twitter account posted: “Scarves are cool.
“The Doctor bundles up in a new photo from the #DoctorWho New Year’s Special, premiering January 1st on @BBCAMERICA.”
Jodie Whittaker’s scarf is a “point for the gays,” say Twitter
Twitter users were quick to respond to the Doctor’s rainbow scarf, with some speculating over whether it means that an LGBT+ storyline is on the way.
“That’s a point for the gays ,” one user said.

“Doctor Who got real gay on us and I am here for it,” one person wrote.
And one person merely tweeted an image of a young Jodie Foster with the phrase “gay silence” photoshopped over the top.
Another user said: “I want this really gay scarf if anyone can point me in the right direction.”
Is the Doctor about to come out as a lesbian?
Other social media users discussed whether Jodie Whittaker’s character is about to come out as a lesbian.
“I know the doctor is a genderless alien who transcends human labels but. That’s a big ole lesbian [sic],” one said.
The speculation comes after the show dropped a hint that one of the Doctor’s companions, Yaz, is bisexual.
In one episode, Yaz’s mum questions the Doctor about whether she is seeing her daughter.
The Doctor responds: “I don’t think so. Are we?”
Yaz, meanwhile, tells her mum that the pair are “friends.”
Whittaker has previously discussed her character’s gender-neutral outfit, which includes a rainbow-themed stripe along her t-shirt.
