Kanye West has apologised to an actor in The Cher Show who called him out for being on his phone during the Broadway musical’s opening night.
Jarrod Spector, who plays Cher’s former husband Sonny Bono in the show, went viral after tweeting on Monday (November 3) during the cast’s debut performance on Broadway to call out the rapper.
He wrote: “Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at @TheCherShow! If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here. It’s opening night. Kind of a big deal for us. Thanks so much.”

West, who was attending the musical with his wife Kim Kardashian West, responded less than three hours later, tweeting at Spector to say that “the dynamics of Cher and Sonny’s relationship made Kim and I grab each other’s hand and sing ‘I got you babe.’
“Please pardon my lack of etiquette. We have so much appreciation for the energy you guys put into making this masterpiece,” added the star.

Though some accused Spector of deliberately going viral with his post, which attracted more than 50,000 retweets and likes, many praised him for highlighting West’s actions.
One fan told him: “You were right to do this. It’s never acceptable to be on one’s phone during a play or musical.
“If something big is happening with work or family that can’t wait 90 minutes and then another 90 minutes, tops, then don’t go into a show.”
Another tweeter wrote that “everyone on this thread saying this tweet is a ‘cry for attention’ clearly has never been a performer.
“Shame on you Kanye. PUT THE PHONE DOWN!”

“Being on your phone during a show people have worked their entire lives to be in is beyond disrespectful, famous or not.”
This line of thinking—that what West did should be called out regardless of his status—was voiced by a number of people, with one saying: “I don’t care who you are.
“You have your phone out during a show and I’m going to want to break it.”
Another wrote: “Anybody, including @kanyewest, is absolute garbage if they can’t follow a practice of common courtesy during a performance.”
Tweets calling on the actor to “DRAG HIM!!!!!” and stating that “#BroadwayTwitter gives none of the f**ks” were also common.
One person wrote: “Shame on you Kanye. PUT THE PHONE DOWN!” while a like-minded theatre fan commented: “NEVER disrespect a Broadway actor.”
Another Twitter user commented that West was fortunate not to be called out in person, writing: “often on Broadway a star actually stops the show to ask people to put away their phones.
“Kanye got lucky with just a tweet.”
