Lady Gaga gets two Golden Globe nominations in wave of queer triumphs
Lady Gaga has received two Golden Globe nominations—for best actress and best original song in A Star Is Born—in a year of LGBT+ successes.
The bisexual actress and singer was recognised on Thursday (November 6) for the film’s hit song “Shallow,” which she co-wrote.
Lady Gaga was joined on the Golden Globes list by historical lesbian comedy The Favourite, which scored five nominations, including best musical or comedy, best screenplay and best actress for Olivia Colman.
Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz will also reignite their on-screen rivalry in the best supporting actress category, where both stars are nominated.
Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody, which tracks the rise of queer music legend Freddie Mercury, has been nominated for best drama film, as well as best actor for Rami Malek.
Gay conversion film Boy Erased missed out on a nomination for best drama, but has been recognised for best original song in a film for “Revelation.”
“I’m not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual”
— Lucas Hedges
Lucas Hedges, who said earlier this year that he was “not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual,” was also nominated for best actor in a drama film for his portrayal of main character Jared Eamons.

Darren Criss and Hugh Grant have both been nominated for their roles as gay men in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and A Very English Scandal respectively.
This was among four nominations received by The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
The show is up for best limited series or film for TV, while its stars Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez have been nominated in the best supporting actress and actor categories.
Barrier-smashing Pose, which features the most transgender actors of any TV show in recent history, received two nominations—one for best TV drama series, and one for Billy Porter for best actor.
The show will be up against queer favourite Killing Eve for best TV drama, which also saw Sandra Oh get a nomination for best actress in a TV drama.
She will face off against The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Elisabeth Moss, whose co-star in the hit Hulu series, Yvonne Strahovski, is nominated for best supporting actress.
Will & Grace‘s Debra Messing was nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy TV show after the show returned to screens last year following a 12-year hiatus.
She will see competition from The Good Place‘s Kristen Bell, whose character Eleanor Shellstrop was confirmed as bisexual earlier this year.
