Alex Kingston wants to return to Doctor Who for romance with Jodie Whittaker
Doctor Who star Alex Kingston would be up for reprising her role as River Song, now the character’s husband has become her wife.
Alex Kingston played the Doctor’s wife River Song on the BBC sci-fi show from 2008 to 2015, during the period that the show’s lead character was played by male actors David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.
However, Kingston has hinted that she would be willing to return to the show after the Doctor’s regeneration into a female incarnation, played by Jodie Whittaker.
Alex Kingston reveals she talked with Jodie Whittaker about Doctor Who comeback
Speaking to the Radio Times, Kingston revealed she had even discussed the prospect with Whittaker, when the pair met behind-the-scenes at Comic Con in 2018.
The actor said: “I did meet her… we chatted about me coming back to Doctor Who!”
Asked about a potential comeback, Kingston replied: “I love the character, and I think that, my gosh, there are wonderful potential opportunities down the road.”
However, she added: “It’s not my decision.”
Kingston added that the Doctor’s change of gender would not dull the romance with River Song, who is omnisexual.
She said: “The fact is, because they’re all the same person ultimately, I don’t think she would think of her any differently to any of the others in a way.”
The star made her exit from the show in 2015 episode The Husbands of River Song, which saw River Song indefinitely written out of the show—though the time travel show has brought back several previously-deceased characters in the past.
River Song would give her wife a ‘big kiss’, Alex Kingston teases
Speaking about the prospect of River Song’s return in 2017, she told fans: “She has a vortex manipulator, and while in a sense her timeline has somewhat been bookended, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it would prevent her from being able to travel and meet this incarnation.”
Kingston added: “I think [River would] just take her in her arms and give her a big kiss.
“I think it would be fantastic. It’d be great fun to explore that possibility, particularly now that the Doctor is going to regenerate into a female form… so yeah, let’s wait and see.”
Kingston and Whittaker posted a selfie together in July 2018.
BBC America’s official Doctor Who Twitter account shared a photo of the pair, captioning it “The Doctor and her wife.”
