A man writing to The Guardian for relationship advice has revealed a very unusual problem: That he realised he has slept with his girlfriend’s dad when he met her parents.

The anonymous man, whose story was published by the Guardian on Tuesday (March 12), said that he went through a “bi phase” five years ago when he “used to sleep around with pretty much everyone that came along, including other men.”

The man went on to explain that “this changed” when he fell in love with his current partner, who he says is “everything to me.”

However, he continued: “I recently met her parents and halfway through lunch realised that I had slept with her father.”

Man says he was planning to propose to girlfriend

The man explained that he is now considering telling his partner, and that the father told him to break up with his girlfriend.

“I was going to propose, but when my partner and her mother were away, he told me to end it with his daughter,” said the man.

“I’m obviously in love—shall I just ignore him, or tell my partner?”

Responding to his enquiry for the Guardian, Pamela Stephenson Connolly, a US-based psychotherapist, advised the man to end his relationship with his girlfriend.

“Hiding the truth would lead to toxic secret-keeping that could be equally destructive in the long run,” she said.

“If this whole family was as open-minded and sexually open as you, it might be possible for you to become part of it.

“However, the father—your former lover—has made it clear that you will not be welcome.

“Walk away now, and avoid the massive pain that would otherwise be inflicted on your partner, her family and yourself.”

Social media users describe man’s dilemma as “awkward”

Twitter users were quick to comment on the unusual story.

“I didn’t think this kind of situation happened outside fanfic,” one person wrote.

Another simply wrote: “Life as a millennial.”

And a third person said: “Well. That’s awkward.”

Journalist and author James Ball, meanwhile, highlighted that the article was similar to a previous dilemma published by the Guardian four years ago.

“What is it with Guardian readers?,” he said.

“These are nearly four years apart… .”
