Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists has shown lesbian couple Alison and Emily getting a divorce.

The spin-off show, which is set a few years after the conclusion of Pretty Little Liars, made the revelation on Wednesday (April 10), during its third episode.

Viewers saw Alison pour herself a glass of wine before finally hitting enter on an email to Emily, which read: “I’m sorry I haven’t returned your calls. This last step has been hard for me. I love you – Alison.”

She then signs divorce papers sent over by Emily, who is revealed as the petitioner. The papers state that the women want a divorce because “this marriage is irrevocably broken.”

Alison then takes off her wedding ring, ending the marriage and breaking queer viewers’ hearts.

Fans of Alison and Emily, who had given the women their ship name Emison, were crushed by the news.

The couple only told each other “I love you,” started a family and got engaged in the final few episodes of Pretty Little Liars.

By the time the spin-off started, they had married, had twins and separated, a fact which left fans disappointed and angry.

Pretty Little Liars‘ Emison fans are distraught

One of these viewers tweeted: “we waited seven seasons. Seven f**king seasons to get emison for like 4 episodes, and then to have it destroyed like this. un f**king believable.”

Another said along the same lines: “we waited SEVEN seasons for Emison to get together.

“And once they finally do, they were engaged and happy and now we’re saying that emily has moved on? that’s bulls**t and so unrealistic.”

A different fan noticed the date of Emily and Alison’s wedding on the divorce papers, writing: “They got married on June 30th .

“There are so many things we never got to witness and so many small details that we never received. And now it’s all over!”

For some, anger was their primary response. One of these people tweeted: “EMISON STANS DID NOT FIGHT 7 YEARS FOR THEIR COUPLE TO BE ENDGAME, GETTING ENGAGED AND MARRIED JUST TO GET A DIVORCE. I DONT APPROVE.”

“THEY ACTUALLY BROKE UP EMISON I CAN’T FUNCTION.”

Another wrote: “EMISON IS OVER? Nope I will not accept this,” while a different tweeter commented: “THEY ACTUALLY BROKE UP EMISON I CAN’T FUNCTION.”

Many fans questioned why it was necessary to break the couple up, considering that they weren’t together on-screen anyway.

“In what world is breaking up Emison more acceptable than just leaving them in a long distance relationship????” wrote one person.

Another said: “You could have the exact same story without hurting Emison. It adds nothing to the mystery, so why? And you claim you love Emison?

“I’m lost. And sad. And mad. And I just don’t understand how you could let this happen #SaveEmison.”
