Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie’s ‘ME!’ music video is super queer
Taylor Swift fans are loving the star’s camp “ME!” music video with Brendon Urie.
The “Reputation” singer teamed up with pansexual Panic! At the Disco star Brendon Urie for new track “ME!”, with the video dropping on Friday (April 25).
Many LGBT+ fans have declared the track a gay anthem, noting the prominence of rainbows and gender-subverting themes across the music video, which culminates in Swift and Urie painting the town rainbow.
Taylor Swift: Track is about embracing your individuality
In the song’s chorus, Swift sings: “One of these things is not like the others/Like a rainbow with all of the colours/Baby doll, when it comes to a lover/I promise that you’ll never find another like me.”
The singer explained to Good Morning America: “‘ME!’ is a song about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it, and owning it. I think that with a pop song, we have the ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads, and I want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves.”
The music video, which already has 17 million views, is getting a lot of attention on social media.
On Twitter, one fan wrote: “Taylor Swift really said GAY RIGHTS on lesbian visibility day huh.”
Another fan quipped: “What a gift @taylorswift13 has given us, on this the most sacred Day of Lesbian Visibility. A SUIT. CATS. RAINBOWS. Truly, we live in a blessed age.”
One Game of Thrones fan joked: “Forget the Unsullied and Dothraki. Ser Taylor of house Swift and ser Brandon of house Urie will fight for Winterfell with their pastel rainbow gay army.”
Taylor Swift made a massive donation to LGBT+ charity
The track’s release comes weeks after Taylor Swift made a massive donation to the Tennessee Equality Project, a non-profit group fighting for LGBT+ rights in the southern state.
Swift sent a handwritten note to the group’s executive director Chris Sanders alongside the $113,000 donation on April 8.
She wrote: “Dear Chris, I’m writing you to sat that I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the ‘Slate of Hate’ in our state legislature.
“Please convey my heartfelt thanks to them and accept this donation to support the work you and those leaders are doing. I’m so grateful that they’re giving all people a place to worship. Sincerely, Taylor Swift.”
The letter was written on personalised stationary with the words “Taylor Swift. Born in 1989. Loves Cats” engraved at the top.
The Tennessee Equality Project said: “Taylor Swift has been a long-time ally to the LGBTQ community. She sees our struggle in Tennessee and continues to add her voice with so many good people, including religious leaders, who are speaking out for love in the face of fear.
“Tennessee Equality Project is honored and grateful to reveal Taylor Swift has made a donation of $113,000 to support our efforts at this critical moment.”
