Anti-gay sign outside Maine church: ‘Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve’
A Baptist church in the US has been criticised for posting an anti-gay message on a sign outside the church.
“Jesus made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” the sign reads.
The Second Baptist Church in Palermo, a town in central Maine with a population of around 1,500 people, has the anti-gay message written on a sign outside the church.
Below is a banner that reads, “Every Life Matters. Abortion is Still Murder,”
Stan York, who raised his children in Palermo with his husband, Tom, said in a Facebook post that he was sad to see the sign.
“This is the town where my husband Tom and I raised our sons, participating in local and school functions with other parents and their families,” he said.
“The same town where we have run a business for over 30 years and employed many Palermo residents. The town where we were both elected as town officials (myself as Treasurer and Tom as a Selectperson) in the late 90s and early 2000s.”
“And now, in 2019, I need to drive my grandchildren past this sign on our way to our family camp; and when they ask questions I have to explain to them about homophobia and hatred, and how their grandparents are not seen as productive and loving members of the community, but people to be feared, shunned and ostracised.
“It is Pride Month for the LGBT community, and I am so very proud of myself and my husband. But I am sad that our children and grandchildren still have to see signs like this one in their back yard.”
Other residents of Palermo have expressed similar sentiments.
“God created Adam and Eve, and Steve and Jimmy and Kimmy and Lola and Linda,” Leslie Dyer said to a local television station.
“God created everybody. Not just Adam and Eve to be Adam and Eve. We’re all here to be happy. We all want to live our best lives. Our happiest lives. And if you find that one person that makes you happy, why shouldn’t you be able to be with them?”
Attempts to reach the pastor of the Second baptist Church have been unsuccessful, local media report.
