Tinder to warn LGBT users in countries where gay sex is illegal
Tinder has announced that it will send users alerts to warn them when they are in countries with laws that criminalise LGBT+ people.
The location-based dating app said on Wednesday (July 24) that it is rolling out the new feature to inform LGBT+ users of the potential dangers they face in certain countries.
Same-sex sexual activity in some form remains illegal in nearly 70 nations across the world.
As part of the update, LGBT+ individuals on the app, which has an estimate 57 million users worldwide, will no longer automatically appear in these areas.

Instead, they will have the choice to stay hidden in these locations or to make their profile public and connect with new people.
Even if a user chooses to appear on Tinder, their sexual orientation or gender identity will not be displayed on their profile until they leave that area.
“Based on your geographical location, it appears you’re in a place where the LGBTQ community may be penalized,” the alert will read.
“We want you to have fun, but your safety is our #1 priority. Please proceed with caution and take extra care when making new matches and meeting with people you do not know.”
Gay sex is still illegal in about 70 nations
Tinder, which was founded in 2012, said it would introduce the new “traveler alert” on iOS and Android in the coming days.

“It’s no secret that we believe everyone has the right to live how they want to live and love who they want to love,” said a safety update on Tinder’s blog on Wednesday (July 24).
“And while there are still efforts to protect our freedoms from LGBTQ discrimination here in US, it’s important to remember that there are still nearly 70 countries around the world that have laws effectively criminalizing LGBTQ status.”
