The L Word: Generation Q trailer reveals some major updates for Bette, Shane and Alice
The first teaser trailer has landed for the long-anticipated L Word revival, and dropped some major reveals about what the main characters have been up to in their decade off-screen.
The reboot, officially titled The L Word: Generation Q, is set to air on Showtime in December, with Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey reprising their respective roles as Bette Porter, Shane McCutcheon and Alice Pieszecki, alongside a swathe of younger cast members.
With three-and-a-half long months to go before the air date, the first trailer has dropped some juicy tidbits about what the reunited gang have been up to.
It’s been ten long years since the end of the show’s original run, and from the trailer, it looks like things have actually been going pretty well for the trio.
Bette Porter, Shane McCutcheon and Alice Pieszecki are back in The L Word: Generation Q
For one thing, Bette has found her way into politics and is now running for Mayor of Los Angeles, explaining: “Los Angeles has been very good to me, and I believe It’s my turn to give back to the city I love so much.”
Meanwhile, Alice appears to have her own TV talk show and production company, quipping: “That hiatus felt really long. It felt like a decade, right?”
Her fortunes appear significantly better than in previously-scrapped L Word sequel The Farm, which would have seen Alice heading to a woman’s prison after being convicted of the murder of divisive original protagonist Jenny Schecter (Mia Kirshner).
Jenny does not appear to be set to return, after her mysterious death in the original show’s final season.
There’s less news about what Shane has been up to in the decade since she was last seen in the trailer—but she can be spotted exiting a private jet and hooking up with several women, so we’re calling that a success.
There’s also a tease of a reunion for the characters, with Bette telling Shane, “I missed you,” before she replies: “I missed you more.”
The L Word revival happened because of Donald Trump
Creator Ilene Chaiken previously revealed the upcoming revival was spurred into life when Donald Trump won the Presidency in 2016.
Chaiken explained at a press event: “We all felt there was a reason to bring the show back and it would be exciting and meaningful and I was waiting for the right time.
“But [the 2016 election] really provoked me to make the move and approach Showtime.”
Jennifer Beals agreed, explaining that she texted Chaiken as the 2016 election results came in to push for the revival.
She said: “We could see the tsunami coming… I think this administration has given people permission to say really hateful things, and they are perpetrating hateful things.
“We haven’t reached any kind of state of equality. The power of storytelling can help that issue.”
The L Word: Generation Q lands on Showtime on December 8.
