Sarah Palin, who believes marriage is only between one man and one woman, is getting divorced

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who has long opposed same-sex marriage on the basis that it should be “between one man and one woman”, is now getting a divorce.

Her husband of 31 years, Todd Palin, has reportedly filed for divorce citing “incompatibility of temperament” which makes it “impossible to live together as husband and wife”.

Court documents filed on Friday, September 6, show that the couple have asked for an equal separation of assets and debts, and shared custody of their 11-year-old son Trig, who has Downs syndrome.

Palin became known for her support of “traditional” family values when she became John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential race.

When it came to same-sex marriage she voiced even stronger opposition than McCain did, saying that she would support a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality, rather than the state-by-state ruling suggested by McCain.

While campaigning to be Alaska’s governor she supported amending the state’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage and continued to fight after it was legalised, pushing for continued support of the Defense of Marriage Act.

She said: “I have always believed that marriage is between one man and one woman. Like the majority of Americans, I support the Defense of Marriage Act and find it appalling that the Obama administration decided not to defend this federal law.”

As news of Palin’s divorce emerged, her detractors pointed out the irony of the situation given her ardent defence of heterosexual marriage as “a cornerstone of religion and civilisation”.

“My schadenfreude is high today,” said trans activist Charlotte Clymer.

Activist and entrepreneur Adam Best said that Palin’s family is “a circus”, referring to her daughter’s teen pregnancy and her son’s repeated arrests on domestic violence and assault charges against his father and girlfriend.
