Piers Morgan blames Sam Smith for ‘wrecking’ the BRIT Awards while missing an extremely obvious point
Piers Morgan has claimed that Sam Smith is responsible for “wrecking” the BRIT Awards, after reports that its gendered award categories could be abolished.
Reports have emerged that the BRIT Awards is considering making the major change for 2021, after three-time winner and eleven-time nominee Sam Smith came out as non-binary.
The Good Morning Britain host vented at the news on Monday, repeatedly misgendering Smith as he likened the decision to controversies about transgender people competing in sport.
Good Morning Britain host claims women ‘will suffer’ because of Sam Smith.
He said: “I think it’s great that such time-honoured awards should be just wrecked like this because one [person] can’t decide if [they’re] male or female.
“They want to accommodate non-binary performers like Sam Smith… which category will [they] now enter? [They] won’t have to, now [they]’ll enter non-binary categories.”
He added: “I’ll tell you what will happen it’ll be like women’s sport decimating. Women will suffer eventually. I suspect what will happen is male performers will end up winning all of the awards than the women.
“The whole point of having the gender categories is to make it fair and equal, now we’re going the other way and not make it fair or equal, and that apparently is progress.
“I think it’s a load of nonsense. The idea that you have change entire award categories because one [person] decides one day to wake up and say I’m non-binary, it’s nonsense.”
Piers Morgan missed an extremely obvious point.
However, the TV host failed to mention that the BRIT Awards is one of the only major awards ceremonies in the music industry that still has gendered categories.
The Grammy Awards abolished its gendered categories in 2012, while the MTV Video Music Awards ditched segregated male and female categories in 2017.
Far from taking awards away from women, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande dominated the 2019 VMAs, with three awards apiece, and Grande taking home the non-gendered Artist of the Year award.
This year’s Grammys saw Kacey Musgraves tie Childish Gambino’s four-award haul, with women taking home three of the four pop awards.
Sam Smith has previously won four Grammys and an Academy Award in gender-neutral categories.
