More than half the couples on MTV’s new reality dating show are LGBT

The MTV reality True Love or True Lies? returns for its second season tonight and out of eight couples featured on the show, five are LGBT+.
Having completed its first season in 2018, this year couples will live in a mansion in Malta but all is not what it seems.
Some of the couples are real, and some are fake, and at each “love ceremony” the other contestants will have to vote for which couple they think is lying to get closer to a cash prize.
When a couple leaves the mansion it will be revealed if they are “lovers” or “liars”. If the contestants have managed to vote out a fake couple the prize fund increases by £10,000.
One couple competing in this series is Timothie and Mahatma, who met on the drag scene as their drag alter-egos Grace Shush and Mahatma Khandi.
Timothie is trans non-binary and uses they/ them pronouns, and their partner Mahatma has never been in a relationship before.
The couple said they want to win to be a visible example of “what society says shouldn’t be a relationship: a gender-fluid, trans non-binary, plus-size, inter-racial, pansexual couple”.

Another couple, Charlie and Chloe, used to be best friends. Charlie came out as a trans man, and they got together soon after.
Chloe said she thinks Charlie is the “most handsome guy ever”.
True Love or True Lies? will also feature lesbian couple Poppy and Parisa, Scottish gay couple Scott and Ryan, and Shadia and Alice, who describe themselves as a “caramel African/Portuguese lesbian and Arab/Spanish bisexual couple with massive hair”.

The non-LGBT+ pairings on the show are “through and through” Essex couple Eliza and Jack, reality TV veterans Kory and Emily, and Declan and Bernadette who have stayed together through Bernadette’s fight against cancer.
The show is hosted by Danny Dyer and his daughter Dani Dyer, and premieres October 21 at 9pm on MTV.
