Singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan has announced that she is splitting from her wife Georgina Gordon, and said that after six years together they will now “part ways on [their] adventure”.

The musician, who was a contestant on The X Factor in 2012, announced the split in a heartfelt Instagram post.

She wrote: “It’s with sadness to let you know that after nearly 6 years of joy, fun and true love Georgina and I have decided to part ways on our adventure.

“We have shared the most amazing times and life together, and we are truly grateful for knowing love at its full capacity.

“We will continue on our paths as the ultimate friends, and dog Mums, united by the bond and memories we will always have.

“We are eternally thankful for the support you have offered us; in this time of hardship we will appreciate space and and time to deal with the change.”

Spraggan turned off comments on the Instagram post so fans took to Twitter to express their sympathy.

One wrote: “Nothing has saddened me more to know that Lucy Spraggan and her wife have split up! No longer believe in love!”

“Lucy Spraggan has split with Georgina and I don’t know how to take this,” wrote another.

The day before her announcement, Spraggan posted to say that she hadn’t been feeling well “physically or mentally” and wanted to thank “everyone who supports me all the time, even when I’m having a hard time”.

The musician proposed to her girlfriend during a romantic boat trip down the Thames in April 2015.

Spraggan and Gordon got married in 2016 and at the time she wrote on Instagram: “I am the luckiest person on this planet”. A year later, in 2017, the couple were approved as foster parents and Spraggan urged her followers who may be interested in fostering to look into it.
