Elizabeth Banks backtracks on sexuality of Kristen Stewart’s Charlie’s Angels character, says she’s ‘definitely gay’

Elizabeth Banks, writer, producer and director of the Charlie’s Angels reboot, has said that Kristen Stewarts character is “definitely gay” in the film.
Earlier this month Banks disappointed many fans who were hoping for a queer Angel when she said that she would not put a “label” on Stewart’s character.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Banks said: “It’s interesting. When I cast [Kristen Stewart], I just wanted her to be… I just felt like she’s almost the way Kristen is. I don’t feel there is a label that fits her.
“The only thing that was important to me was to not label it as anything. It’s fine if the media wants to label it, I think that’s OK, but I didn’t do that.”
But now, speaking with Pride Source, Banks has backtracked and said that Stewart’s character Sabina Wilson is “definitely gay”.
Banks said: “Kristen’s character is definitely gay in the movie. I mean, she wanted to be gay in the movie and I’m like, ‘Yeah.’
“I made sure we kept that little moment in so that you understand what she was attracted to… I just wanted to make sure that she was able to present a character that she was fully behind.”

She added that sexuality was not written into the script for any of the characters, but that she “didn’t want to put any limits on anyone”.
Asked how the character of Sabina identifies, she said: “I believe that she refers to herself as queer.”
Banks also said that LGBT+ inclusivity was “good business” in the film industry, and added: “It just comes down to the fact that a white male, cisgender perspective is just not fresh.
“We’ve been looking at ’em for 100 years. And in media right now, I’m about giving voice to something a little different than that.”
Charlie’s Angels was originally a TV series in the 70s, and then made into a film starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore in 2000.
The new version will see Stewart star alongside Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the next generation of Angels working for the mysterious Charlie.
Charlie’s Angels is out in cinemas on November 29.
