Bisexual Frozen 2 star thinks these classic Disney films were led by queer characters

Frozen 2 star Evan Rachel Wood addressed whether Elsa could every get a girlfriend, saying she “is still not convinced” that two major Disney characters aren’t queer.
After a six-year wait, Disney’s Frozen 2 has finally been released cinemas, winning rave reviews and raking in record-breaking ticket sales.
While the film has been applauded for the way it deftly touches on social issues such as colonialism and climate change, LGBT+ fans have one major bugbear: that the film didn’t give Elsa a girlfriend.

Since the first Frozen was released in 2013, queer fans have claimed Elsa as one of their own, drawing parallels between the princess being forced to suppress her powers and the coming out experience.
Elsa wasn’t given a male love interest in Frozen – a rarity for a Disney princess – which many hoped was a signal that she would get a girlfriend in the sequel.
While this didn’t happen, Evan Rachel Wood – who plays Elsa’s mother Queen Iduna in Frozen 2 – has said that she doesn’t think it impossible that a Disney film could be led by a queer character. In fact, she thinks it might already have happened, twice.
“I’m still not convinced that we haven’t already with Mulan and Hercules,” the bisexual actor told Variety.
“Honestly, Mulan is still up for debate. I think there’s a little bi-energy going on there.”
Jennifer Lee, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, who wrote and co-directed both Frozen films, added that an LGBT+ lead character certainly isn’t out of the question.
“I mean there are no limits to the characters we can have,” she said.
Will Elsa get a girlfriend in Frozen 3?
Lee’s words will come as welcome news to fans who are holding out for Frozen 3 to finally give Elsa a girlfriend.
Disney are yet to confirm whether Elsa and her sister Anna will return for another instalment, and Lee has said that Frozen 2 “feels like the end”.
But with the film beating forecasts and the box office debut of its predecessor – which went on to take $1.27billion – another sequel seems likely, if not inevitable.
According to entertainment website We Got This Covered, Disney is already considering a third film, and plans to introduce a female love interest for Elsa.
A source told the website that Elsa was originally set to get a girlfriend in Frozen 2: “They did originally want to do so in the second film, but it was ultimately decided that it was too soon.”
“The intention is for Elsa to have a girlfriend in the threequel, confirming her sexuality in the process,” the website added.
