Mel C is shocked by the scale of transphobia in the UK

Mel C says Girl Power means equality for trans people, too

Mel C has became the latest high-profile figure to speak out about transphobia in Britain, which has seen an explosion in anti-trans hate crimes over the past few years.

Speaking to The Guardian, the Spice Girls singer opened up about learning about trans rights while touring with queer drag collective Sink the Pink.

Mel C:  Transphobia has to be addressed.

She said: “I mean, Jesus Christ, can you imagine growing up feeling like you’re in the wrong body?”

Mel C told the newspaper that she is shocked by the prevalence of transphobia in British culture.

She said: “We have to move on. Things change.

“Thank goodness people are able to be who they truly feel they are rather than living miserable lives or secret lives.

“It’s something that has to be acknowledged and addressed.”

Spice Girls singer has been flying the flag all over the world for trans rights.

Performing at Brighton Pride in August, the singer donned a transgender flag and dedicated Spice Girls classic ‘2 Become 1’ to the trans community.

The performance was part of Mel C and Sink the Pink’s global tour of Pride events.

Speaking to Vice previously about transphobia, Mel C said: “I think it’s all fear. It’s this social thing; it’s tradition and it’s gone through families.

“It’s this fear and ignorance… All these things, they all come from fear and just not knowing. Fundamentally, that’s where the problem lies.”

“But if you get to know these people, it dissipates because you think, ‘God, they’re just people too.’ We’re all just people, we all just want the same things.’

“That’s one of the reasons why I feel very lucky – not everybody has the opportunity to really spend time with people in the trans and non-binary community.”
