Dad arrested for abandoning his son on a motorway after he found him watching gay porn
A Florida man, 30-year-old Evenaud Julmeus, has been charged with with three counts of child abuse after he abandoned his son at the side of the road because he suspected he was gay.
The boy’s name and age have not been disclosed, but he police say he is a pre-teen. He was found on Sunday 29 November outside Haines City police department, which was closed at the time.
The child had a small duffel bag with a few items of clothing inside, but no food, water or money with him. He was seen by a member of the public who alerted the police to the situation.
An officer dispatched to the scene described the boy as “upset and crying”. He told the officer that his father thinks he is gay because he found him watching male pornography on his phone.
The two allegedly got into a verbal argument before the father ordered his son to pack a bag. Julmeus said he was taking him to the police department where they “would find him a new home”, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by ABC News.
Julmeus then forced him to get out of the vehicle on Highway 27 before driving off and leaving him. The father hadn’t tried to contact law enforcement to advise them of the situation, and the boy had no phone to call anyone for help.
When police went to the family home to investigate they found that Julmeus had already fled, leaving two other young children without supervision. The children’s mother was out searching for the son who had been abandoned.
Evenaud Julmeus has been charged with three counts of negligent child abuse without bodily harm. He later turned himself in to the police on Monday, 2 December.
The affidavit states that the father left his juvenile son at “a closed police department with no one around, failing or omitting to provide the victim with care, supervision and services necessary to maintain physical or mental health while also failing to make a reasonable effort to protect the victim from abuse, neglect or exploitation of others”.
