Woman hangs 10,000 rainbow Christmas lights to protest against homophobic neighbours
‘Tis the season for battling homophobia, as one woman in the US found out when she fought against her anti-gay neighbours in a pretty lit way during Christmas.
In a sparkling example of how love trumps hate, a Seattle local made a statement against homophobes by covering her lawn in 10,000 rainbow Christmas lights.
Lexi Magnusson posted a picture of the dazzling display on reddit, blinding anti-LGBT+ people with her post that tallied more than 45,500 upvotes.
Anti-LGBT Mormon neighbour gives a neighbour a bright idea.
The 34-year-old said in the caption: “Our new neighbours are bigots.
“Since regular aggression leads to assault charges, I went with passive aggression. 10,000 lights later.”
Magnusson, who lives on the outskirts of the Washington city, told the Huffington Post that her bright idea came after her neighbour swung by her home.
“She’s Mormon and heard that we were, too,” she explained.
“My guess is that she thought we were still believers, even though my husband told her we no longer attend.
“I imagine she thought we still held the same belief about LGBTQ issues as the Church does.
“We absolutely do not. It’s why I left the Mormon church.”
But she grew weary of her new neighbour after she explained that she moved to the state to “protect her children”.
Apparently, the neighbour’s son had attended a high-school that allowed a lesbian couple to attend prom and had school assemblies where they spoke openly and proudly of the trans community.
Oh, won’t somebody please think of the children?
‘I wanted the rainbow to stand out so there was no question as to what it is.’
“She said that she wanted to get her children away from that sort of influence and people making that ‘lifestyle’ OK,” Magnusson added.
Outraged, “I responded only with: ‘Your kids are going to be exposed to this no matter where you take them. Kids these days get it.
“‘They know not to be horrible to other kids based on how they were born’,” she said.
“Then I walked inside [my house] and rage-ate a bowl of nachos.”
But when the 2016 presidential election happened in November, darkened blanketed Seattle as she realised how many locals didn’t quite share her pro-LGBT views.
Being a fan of “ridiculous amounts of lights” and Christmas on the horizon, Magnusson converted her hedges into a constellation of rainbow rays.
“I felt good the entire time I put them up,” she said.
“I sent a text to my cousin who loves Christmas lights like I do, and who is also gay. His approval was everything.
“I wanted the rainbow to stand out so there was no question as to what it is.”
