US national soccer teammates Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger get married
Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger, US national soccer players who helped the team achieve its 2019 World Cup victory, got married on Saturday December 27.
Harris proposed to Krieger while the pair enjoyed a picnic on Florida’s Clearwater Beach in September last year. As the two posed for a selfie against the sunset, Harris held up a ring.
The magical ceremony and reception were held Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, complete with rainbow wedding cake and a speech by teammate and lesbian icon Megan Rapinoe.
Harris told PEOPLE ahead of the wedding: “This will be the first time in our relationship where all of our friends, all of our family are going to come together to be one and to celebrate us on a completely different level.
“I think so much of our support from our family and friends have been through soccer and this is just so much more meaningful, in my opinion, to be celebrated for love and acceptance and inclusion, that’s so major in the world we live in now.”
She added: “I’m so excited to have this type of platform to have this type of visibility to be seen as a gay couple and it be accepted and it be important.”
Krieger added that while planning the wedding, the venue had been the “most important thing”. She continued: “It was this kind of Mediterranean castle-like vibe right on the water, this European-type vibe that we were going for.
“Right when we walked in we were like: ‘Oh my God. We love this and everyone else was going to love this and this is just … This is it.'”
Krieger wore a white gown by Pronovias and Harris wore a custom-made suit by LGBT+ designer Thome Browne. Their rings were created by Great Heights, because Krieger said the company “share the same vision and support surrounding equality and LGBTQ marriage rights.”
The couple announced their engagement in March 2019, and before then had not publicly acknowledged their relationship.
Krieger told PEOPLE at the time: “We wanted to be professional and make sure that we showed up every day and did our job and it wasn’t just because we were together, it was because we love what we do, and we’re really good at what we do.”
