Star of hit Netflix series You confirms his character isn’t straight and ‘never will be’

Actor James Scully has confirmed that his character Forty Quinn in season two of the hit Netflix series You is not straight and he “never will be”.
Scully, who is gay, was asked by a fan during an Instagram Q&A about his character’s sexuality.
“Since you’re queer, what made you guys decide that Forty would be straight?” the fan asked.
Scully responded: “We didn’t, and he wasn’t, and he is not and never will be.”
You star James Scully had previously suggested his character Forty was not straight.
The actor’s comments come just weeks after he first suggested that his character is not straight in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
When an interviewer suggested that Forty Quinn could be sexually fluid, he confirmed that there were discussions behind closed doors with writers about the character’s sexuality.
It was nice being able to play the character even if I was realising retroactively that [he] was sexually fluid where we didn’t need to stress that in any way.
While Forty has a girlfriend in the series, Scully asked one of the writers directly while they were shooting his scenes about his sexual orientation.

“Did you guys ever discuss Forty’s sexuality in the writers’ room?” he asked one of the writers on You.
“[One of the writers] asked me what I thought. Again, he doesn’t have a regular relationship with sex anyway because his first sexual experience was date rape. So it’s a lot of bad-term sex. But because he’s still craving affection, he uses sex as a tool a lot.
“I think Forty would have sex with whoever he decided he wanted to have sex with. And it was nice being able to play the character even if I was realising retroactively that [he] was sexually fluid where we didn’t need to stress that in any way.
“It was what it was and he was who he was,” he added.
You follows serial killer Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley, as he develops intense obsessions with women – who often become his victims. The show’s second season hit the streaming platform last month.
Since the show landed on Netflix in December 2018, it has attracted a huge following.
