Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan dresses to impress gay men at red carpet events like the true ally she is
Nicola Coughlan became queen of the gays for playing “wee lesbian” Clare on Derry Girls, and the Irish actress has revealed that she takes that title seriously.
In fact, she takes it so seriously that she dresses to impress gay men, a notoriously hard-to-please demographic.
The actress wrote on Twitter: “Do you have any idea how stressful it is to dress for Red Carpet events when the main demographic you care about impressing is gay men?”
The tweet has been liked more than 9,000 times, and LGBT+ people have been piling into the replies to advise Coughlan on how best to impress queer people.

Irish drag queen Panti Bliss had some important advice to offer.
Just keep saying you have a big dick. The gays are simple creatures really.

Others wanted to reassure Coughlan that she has plenty of gay admirers already.

Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan has a huge following on Twitter for her political musings and hilarious tweets.
Coughlan rose to fame for playing Clare in Channel 4’s hit sitcom Derry Girls, which became the channel’s most successful comedy since Father Ted. The show charts the lives of a group of teenagers in Northern Ireland in the 1990s at the tail end of the Troubles.
In the show’s first season, Clare came out as gay.
“Erin! It’s me. I’m the wee lesbian,” she declared.
Do you have any idea how stressful it is to dress for Red Carpet events when the main demographic you care about impressing is gay men?
“I’ve never been brave enough to say it out loud before but I think that’s why I wrote the story, and then it all got too real, I got too scared, but, well, you’ve made me realise it’s all OK,” the character said.
The 33-year-old, who is from Galway, Ireland, has made a name for herself as an outspoken political activist on Twitter, where she also doles out hilarious one-liners.
