A ton of LGBT-inclusive ads are set to air during the Super Bowl and, naturally, One Million Moms are fuming
At least six LGBT-inclusive ads are set to air during the Super Bowl, as brands seek to better represent queer people on screen.
The slew of adverts come just six years after LGBT+ people were represented during the lucrative advertising slot for the first time.
This year, ads for Pop Tarts, TurboTax, Amazon, Olay and Sabra Hummus will ensure LGBT+ people are represented.
Super Bowl ads star a ton of LGBT+ famous faces
The Pop Tarts ad features non-binary Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness, serving some spon-con realness.
In a teaser for the ad, Van Ness declares it’s “time for this snack to get a snack,” before freaking out over the “so dull, so dry, so crusty” pretzels on display.
Meanwhile, Sabra’s ad stars Drag Race alum Miz Cracker and Kim Chi, alongside Caroline Manzo and Teresa Giudice of the Real Housewives of New Jersey, and – inexplicably – T-Pain.
A teaser for the 30-second clip shows Cracker trying to put a football helmet over a wig while Kim Chi watches on.
Amazon has clearly shelled out the big bucks for its Alexa ad, which stars Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi in their home – or, at least, a neocapitalist impersonation of their home.
The ad, which DeGeneres aired for the first time on her talk show, features the pair imagining a time before smart devices – with a line of historical figures asking servants to perform trivial tasks.
The musical TurboTax ad declarers that “all people are tax people” – featuring a Pose-inspired ballroom scene with shots of Hustlers actress Trace Lysette and Isis King of When They See Us.
The Doritos ad stars out country icon Lil Nas X popping some moves to ‘Old Town Road’ opposite Western star Sam Elliott.
Olay’s ad stars bisexual late-night talk show host Lilly Singh as a female astronaut, pushing a message about STEM education for women.
One Million Moms are absolutely not OK with all this gay
Naturally, all that combined queerness is far too much for One Million Moms – part of the fringe anti-LGBT group American Family Association.
The group hit out at brands “promoting an agenda of sexual confusion,” claiming: “Normalising this lifestyle is contrary to what conservative, Christian parents are teaching their children about God’s design for sexuality.”
One Million Moms called on the NFL and FOX “to stop approving inappropriate marketing campaigns… so that the game is suitable for fans of all ages to watch.”
GLAAD said:”Unfortunately for the anti-LGBTQ activists, this year will mark the most diverse and LGBTQ-inclusive advertising seen during the Super Bowl in its history.
“Brands like Sabra, Olay, Amazon Alexa, Pop Tarts, Doritos and TurboTax are proving that groups who advocate for hatred will be ignored, as family friendly brands of all kinds march forward towards more inclusivity and diversity in advertising.”
GLAAD boss Sarah Kate Ellis added: “The level of diverse LGBTQ inclusion from at least [six] advertisers during advertising’s biggest night, coupled with Katie Sowers’ trailblazing role as Offensive Assistant Coach of the 49ers, mark a rainbow wave at the Super Bowl this year.
“We can’t wait for American families to see and cheer on LGBTQ icons like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Lilly Singh, Trace Lysette, Isis King, Jonathan Van Ness, Miz Cracker, and Kim Chi – it’s about time.”
