Texas Republicans ban LGBT group from convention yet again, claiming they promote ‘unnatural sex’
The Log Cabin Republicans have once again been barred from the Texas Republican state convention.
The Texas GOP has long refused to permit the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay Republicans who advocate for LGBT rights, to have any official presence at its convention.
The party has now rejected the group’s application for a stall at the 2020 convention, marking the 22nd year in which the Log Cabin Republicans have been refused permission to attend.
Texas GOP refuses to permit gay group, despite pleas
The Log Cabin Republicans had begged to attend, pointing out its loyal advocacy for “all of the most conservative candidates” in recent elections.
However, on Saturday the state’s Republican Executive Committee opted to quietly block a motion that would have allowed the group to attend.
In the meeting, state senator Bob Hall raged against the Log Cabin Republicans, insisting that the group is “not on the same side” because it doesn’t “have the basic belief in the God of the Bible that we are founded on.”
Hall also raged against LGBT+ activists for supporting “[the] abominable sex education that goes on in our schools where they’re trying to push unnatural sex as natural” — though there is no evidence that the Log Cabin Republicans have ever actually challenged their party on the issue.
Log Cabin Republicans ‘disappointed’ by decision to ban it for 22nd year
The LGBT+ group, which has not succeeded in electing a single out LGBT+ Republican to office in Texas or any federal office in its decades of existence, lamented the decision to exclude it yet again.
Houston chapter president Marco Roberts told the Austin American-Statesman: “Obviously, we are very disappointed with the decision made by our elected representatives.
“There were a few courageous members of the [executive committee] who stood with us, even under enormous pressure to refrain from doing so. We owe them our highest respect and deepest gratitude.”
Steven Hotze, who leads the Conservative Republicans of Texas, was among those to lead opposition to the group.
Hotze, who has previously compared gay people to termites and claimed homosexuality was created by the Soviet Union to destroy America, accused the Log Cabin Republicans of being “a front group for the LGBTQ, the political organisation that is promoting the homosexual movement in society.”
The Republican activist claimed that LGBT+ people are actually paedophiles, and added: “The homosexual political movement wants minority status to be granted to individuals based on their immoral and perverted sexual proclivities.”
