Cher wants Pink to rewrite one of her classic songs as a scathing protest against Donald Trump

Cher has made a demand that absolutely nobody wanted but, well, now you’ve said it, we’ll take it, to singer-songwriter Pink; re-release “Dear Mr President”.

The 2006 song was a scathing attack against then-US president George Bush.

Highlighting the lawmaker’s opposition to marriage equality and the wider LGBT+ rights movement, criticising the Iraq War, the No Child Left Behind Act, his perceived lack of empathy towards low income households and Bush’s track record for drinking and drug usage in college.

…And breathe.

Cher: ‘”Dear Mr President” has always been my favourite.’

Expectedly, when the TV personality and retail tycoon Donald Trump wrestled his way to the White House, a chorus of singers called for Pink to drop a sequel back in 2017.

At the time, Pink tweeted: “There aren’t words for this shameful person.”

Years have past since Trump’s election, but Cher has since renewed the campaign for a Trump rendition of “Dear Mr President”.

“Pink needs to rewrite,” Cher tweeted, before having a gap larger than the wait for the Iowa caucus results, remember them? When are we getting all the results?

Anyway.

“‘Dear Mr President.’ Please babe.

“Alecia… It’s time, you know it’s always been my favourite.”

It was also the majority of the population with ears’ favourite, too. Considering that the track dominated the charts across the world when it released as part of the singer’s fourth album, I’m Not Dead.

Pink wouldn’t be without material for a new version of the song.

Many of the song’s original criticism would resonate greatly today, but could do with a few additions.

Such as the Trump administration tirade against the trans community, such as the trans military ban.

As well as its relentless roll back of rights across the board.

Furthermore, a number of federal departments have grossly violated the rights of LGBT+ administrators and aids.

Last year, the Department of Justice filed a brief in the lead-up to a Supreme Court hearing on anti-LGBT+ discrimination in the workplace that claimed “sex stereotyping by itself is not a Title VII violation” – essentially saying that it’s legal to fire trans workers because of their gender identity.

Moreover, a spectre of violence continues to haunt queer folk as anti-LGBT+ hate crime have surged throughout Trump’s term as president.

Trump’s administration has also allegedly drained HIV/AIDS funding to pay for child migrant detention, considered ways to legally erase trans people, and been linked to numerous anti-LGBT+ hate groups.

And that, we imagine, would just cover at least a verse or two.

Pink has yet to respond to Cher’s demand, but her country needs her now more than ever.
