Non-binary singer Sam Smith is worried they’ll be ‘misgendered till the day I die’

Non-binary singer Sam Smith said they’re worried they’ll be misgendered forever.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1 released Friday, the 27-year-old said that they know their fans will get their pronouns wrong at times.
Smith said: “What’s hard is people changing their vocabulary; that’s very, very difficult. It takes time.
“Everyone messes up. I’m going to be misgendered to the day I die.”
They added: “This is going to take a long, long time for people to not use gender in their vocabulary.”

The “To Die For” hitmaker also reflected that day on what Valentine’s Day – which can, for some, feel more polyester flowers and priced-up chocolates than love – means to them.

During a chat on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp Friday, Smith sounded out about the romantic holiday, branding it “sad” and “offensive”.
“It’s my twenty seventh year of being single on Valentine’s Day,” they explained, “I’m over it.
‘It’s offensive. Yeah I’m sad today.
“Today’s a sad day. It’s more like a funeral.”
As they hashed it out with co-hosts Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, Theakston stated the day was “invented by the card industry”.
Holden honed in that it was “Clintons” which are responsible, which Smith added: “Exactly.
“I used to work in Clinton cards, that’s probably why I hate Valentine’s Day.”
Smith also lasered in on their relationship with their gender: “I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between.
“It’s all on the spectrum.
“I’ve always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind, ‘I do think like a woman sometimes’, in my head.
“Sometimes I’ve questioned, ‘Do I want a sex change?’ It’s something I still think about, like, ‘Do I want to?'”
