Sam Smith says it’s okay to ‘trip up’ sometimes over pronouns, they do it too
Sam Smith has said that they are not offended when people “trip up” over their pronouns, as long as they’re making an effort.
The non-binary singer is currently in Australia preparing to perform at Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras over the weekend.
In an interview with The Project, journalist and Sam Smith super-fan Carrie Bickmore admitted that she had used he/him pronouns accidentally to describe them on the way to the interview.
But they responded: “I trip up too! Of course I do, I’m a human being. I have been called ‘he and him’ since the day I was born, you know, 27 years of my life, so I can understand.
“My mum, all the time, she’ll call me ‘he/him’ and then she gets angry with herself. It’s okay. But it is important, you know?”
Smith added: “All I can say is that when people use my pronouns correctly, it’s a wonderful feeling. I feel safe, I feel happy, and I feel completely seen.”
The ‘Promises’ singer also revealed the moment that they heard the term “non-binary” for the first time.
They said: “I was actually in Australia, I was in Brisbane on tour, with my second tour ‘The Thrill of it All’.
“It was weird, I had a massive night out at the end of the tour and I was drunk at 3am with my bandmates and friends in my room and I just started hearing about the term non-binary, and I’d never heard it before.
“The pronoun thing for me just felt like a flag in the ground kind of, like this is how I want to be treated by everyone.”
Smith added that they were excited for their Mardi Gras performance.
They said: “We’ve just pulled out all the stops now. I’m in this wonderful position where there are literally no boundaries when it comes to my performance, when it comes to what I wear, movement, and everything.
“I just feel like I can be myself in front of people at the moment which is really scary but also incredibly liberating.”
Sam Smith sat down for a chat with their number one fan, our very own @BickmoreCarrie.
We haven’t seen her since & can only assume she’s camped outside Sam’s Airbnb hoping for some more hang time. Carrie’s honoured to be able to share with you the journey Sam's been on recently. pic.twitter.com/Yu4GH1mFqk
