Ellen DeGeneres pokes fun at heteronormative dating phenomenon Love is Blind in hilarious skit
Ellen DeGeneres just couldn’t resist poking fun at the painfully straight setup of Netflix’s new dating show, Love is Blind.
The dating show everyone’s talking about bills itself as “a social experiment where single men and women look for love and get engaged, all before meeting in person”. They must then test their relationships in the real world, before getting married (or not, as the case may be).
The dating show hasn’t exactly handled LGBT+ issues well in the past: in the last season, one relationship was torn apart when a male contestant came out as bisexual to the fury of his female fiancé.
When asked if the Love is Blind could become more LGBT-inclusive, producer Chris Coelen claimed that it isn’t actually about sexuality, and that introducing LGBT+ relationships in the current format would create “logistical difficulties“.
On Tuesday Ellen called the show out on this in the way she does best – a light-hearted comedy skit with a tinge of sarcasm behind it.
“Could Ellen Find Love on Love Is Blind?” the title of the skit asks. The answer of course is no, because the popular show is inherently heteronormative and only puts male and female contestants together.
“I was in one of the early episodes. I wasn’t looking for love and I didn’t find it,” Ellen joked.
The lesbian comedian inserted herself into a faux scene where one of the male contestants, Damian, proposes to an unseen woman in the pod next door.
“Today, I give you all of me,” he says. “I get on one knee for the first time in my life, and I ask you, will you marry me?”
“Oh, no, there’s a mix-up here,” DeGeneres replies. “I’m here for a Netflix meeting. I think I came in the wrong door.
“Somebody get me out of this thing! Uh, straight people.”
