Rush Limbaugh took a day off, and his replacement wasted no time blaming ‘the gays’ for coronavirus lockdown
Rush Limbaugh guest host Mark Steyn has made a sickening attempt to blame gay people for the coronavirus lockdown, after presumably arriving 35 years too late for his favourite kind of pandemic.
Steyn, a pro-Trump radio pundit, stood in as host of The Rush Limbaugh Show on Tuesday – and wasted no time in bashing LGBT+ people with even more vitriol than the man himself.
Referencing measures to prevent coronavirus in San Francisco, the radio host made a brazen and baseless attempt to blame the city’s gay community.
Rush Limbaugh’s guest host is somehow even worse than Rush Limbaugh.
Per the clip from Media Matters, Steyn said: “San Francisco has just ordered everyone to shelter in place, just to say, ‘Stay in your apartment. Don’t leave your apartment unless you need to go out to a grocery store or to a pharmacy or to a doctor.’
“Why is San Francisco the first to do that? Because they’ve got all the gay guys there… it’s a big gay town, San Francisco, and they’re the ones with all the compromised immune systems from all the protease inhibitors and all the other stuff.
“And they don’t want all the gays dropping dead on the San Francisco mayor’s watch. So that’s why they’ve got all that sheltering in place there.”
Steyn added: “If they all dropped dead on the San Francisco mayor’s watch, if there was a big gay apocalypse, you know, the way this thing is going now, it would be Trump who would get blamed for it anyway…. it would be his ‘homophobia’ that would have struck down all these people in San Francisco.
“So that’s why they’ve all been ordered to stay home. And it’s not easy staying home.”
Nearly 40 years on and people still think gay-bashing is a good response to a pandemic.
In case it needs pointing out – which, to be honest, it really shouldn’t – coronavirus is a global pandemic which has impacted cities across the world, and which originated in a country not exactly known for its warm embrace of the LGBT+ community.
There is no evidence that gay people are responsible for the spread of coronavirus, and measures put in place to protect people are put in place to protect everyone equally.
Of course, dollar-store homophobic bigotry in response to pandemics is hardly new, but it’s heartening to see conservatives have made exactly zero progress in the 38 years since the last time they were all laughing about the deaths of “faggots” during the AIDS crisis.
We never thought we’d be hoping for the speedy return of Rush Limbaugh to the airwaves, but here we are.
