The town where Call Me by Your Name was filmed is on lockdown, and Timothée Chalamet is ‘heartbroken’
Timothée Chalamet is sending love to the town in Italy where Call Me by Your Name was filmed.
The actor spoke out after reports that Crema, known as the picturesque real-world setting for the acclaimed gay film, has been impacted by coronavirus.
Timothée Chalamet is ‘heartbroken’ for Crema.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “I’m thinking of EVERYONE in hotspots right now, young and old, but CREMA – my heart is with you, I can’t believe this is happening.
“Heartbroken at these stories I‘m reading, in locations I know! Please try to stay safe.”
All of Italy has been placed on lockdown due to coronavirus, with residents not permitted to leave their homes as deaths continue to spiral. Crema, in the Lombardy region, is inside one of the worst-impacted areas.
Crematoriums in the region have struggled to cope with the deaths caused by coronavirus, with the army brought in to move coffins from city of Bergamo after it reached capacity.
Writing for the New York Times, Crema resident Beppe Severgnini spoke about the “bizarre silence” in the town.
He wrote: “Our hospital has been swamped by COVID-19 patients. I know several people who work there – doctors, nurses, staff. They’re exhausted, but don’t give up.
“Lombardy’s public health service is the best in Italy, and Italy’s is widely considered the best in Europe. Still, it’s hard. As of Wednesday, there were 91 COVID-19 cases in Crema, and 263 in the wider area around it known as Cremasco.”
Crema featured prominently in Call Me by Your Name.
More than just a filming location, the town of Crema featured prominently on screen in Call Me by Your Name – with Elio and Oliver making trips into town and showcasing its picturesque scenery.
A sequel to the original Call Me by Your Name novel was published in 2018, reprising the story of the couple years later.
There is also a lot of buzz that a film followup could eventually be in the works.
Director Luca Guadagnino has hinted previously that some preliminary development has begun on developing the follow-up film, while Armie Hammer and Chalamet have said they are both “1,000 per cent in” to reprise their roles for a sequel.
