Will there be another season of Schitt’s Creek? Dan Levy hints at possible reunion later down the line
Schitt’s Creek is – for now – drawing to a close with its season six finale. But according to creator-star Dan Levy, there could be another season further down the line.
The ascent of Schitt’s Creek from plucky Canadian sitcom to world-conquering, queer-positive sensation has been a joy to behold.
The riches-to-rags comedy debuted in 2015, with father-and-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy (Johnny and David Rose) joined by Home Alone’s Catherine O’Hara (Moira) and Annie Murphy (Alexis) as a wealthy family transplanted to the titular town after losing their fortune.
Schitt’s Creek won critical acclaim from the beginning, but it exploded in popularity after being picked up by Netflix in the UK, US and other territories in 2017. Right now, the show is being watched my more people than ever.
Season six viewing figures are up 60 per cent on last year in Canada, with the series as a whole Netflix US’s current second most-watched acquired show, according to Variety.
Its cultural impact can also be measured by the sheer amount of Moira Rose memes, “Ew, David” gifs and “A Little Bit Alexis” TikToks currently flooding the internet.
Will there be another season of Schitt’s Creek?
Despite all of this, the series drew to a close on Tuesday, April 7 in Canada with the Schitt’s Creek series finale, “Happy Ending”. British and American fans face a wait, as season six of Schitt’s Creek will be released on Netflix later in the year.
Dan Levy decided to bring the Rose family’s story to a close two years ago, when Pop handed him a two-year renewal at the end of season four.
“I wish that this show could have gone on 100 seasons. But it’s quality over quantity,” he told Variety.
“I at no point wanted to compromise on quality or storytelling.
“It just didn’t feel like it was worth the risk to take it any further.”
Season seven could come later down the line.
Although there are no immediate plans to continue the series, Levy admitted that the door is open for a reunion later down the line.
“If an idea crosses my path that I feel is deserving of our cast’s time, then let’s do it,” he said.
He said that right now, he isn’t sure what that story “could possibly be”.
“But I would love to revisit these characters, and I would love to get to play with this cast again,” he added.
