‘You take what people hate about you and put it in their faces’: HBO ballroom show Legendary drops new trailer and it looks sickening

The first trailer for ballroom reality series Legendary is here, and it looks stunning.

HBO Max has dropped a new trailer for Legendary, its upcoming voguing competition show, and it looks stunning.

Legendary takes inspiration from the New York ballroom scene — most recently depicted in the hit drama Pose — and adds some reality TV magic.

Across nine episodes, the show will see eight houses compete across a series of balls for a grand prize of $100,000, with judges including Law Roach, Jameela Jamil, Leiomy Maldonado, and Megan Thee Stallion.

The trailer gives a peek at some of the outfits on display, serving everything from sci-fi to punk and honestly, Drag Race was found quaking.

HBO Max’s Legendary is serving RuPaul-could-never realness.

The HBO Max show will put its diverse queer cast front-and-centre, with one competitor affirming: “Ballroom taught me how to be me.”

Another Legendary dancer adds: “You’re taking what people hate about you, and putting it in their faces. It’s empowering.”

Sharing the trailer, judge Jameela Jamil wrote: ” Making sure this show happened is one of my proudest life moments.

“I was so honoured to work alongside my friend and our star @DashaunWesley and our beautiful judges @leiomy@theestallion @LUXURYLAW celebrating the iconic Ballroom community.”

Responding to the trailer, one fan said: “RuPaul’s Drag Race who? never heard of her.”

Another added: “OKAY I AM ABOUT TO GET ME AN HBO SUBSCRIPTION!!!!!!”

Legendary: HBO Max release date.

Legendary drops on HBO Max in the US on Wednesday, May 27.

The streaming service is yet to launch in other markets, meaning it could be a while before international fans get to see the show.

Jameela Jamil came out as queer due to show backlash.

The choice of Jameela Jamil as a judge ignited some controversy when the show was first announced, with some suggesting that The Good Place star had no connection to the Black LGBT+ community.

The criticism motivated the actor and activist to come out publicly as queer, admitting: “This is absolutely not how I wanted to come out.”

She continued: “I know that my being queer doesn’t qualify me as ballroom. But I have privilege and power and a large following to bring to this show (as does the absolutely iconic Megan Thee Stallion) and its beautiful contestants and hosts.”

In response to the critics who questioned what she is bringing to the judge’s role, she referred to her “11 years of hosting experience, being fully impartial, a newcomer to ballroom, and therefore a window in for people who are just discovering it now and being a longtime ally of the LGBTQ community”.
