Soap actor comes out as bisexual while adding her name to the growing list of queer stars vying to play Batwoman

Soap actor Camryn Grimes has come out as bisexual and thrown her hat into the ring to take on the role of Batwoman from Ruby Rose.

Grimes, who currently stars in CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, made the comments on Twitter after Rose announced she was quitting the show.

Following Rose’s announcement, Batwoman producers said they will cast an openly LGBT+ actor to take on the role in the show’s second season.

So, some fans were confused when Grimes – who many had assumed to be straight – said she wanted to take on the role.

After the actor tweeted her interest in the part, a fan replied: “As AMAZING as this would be and as much as I support this idea, I think they’re looking for an out LGBT actress for the role.”

Soap actor Camryn Grimes came out as bisexual and expressed interest in playing Batwoman.

Grimes’ response was as direct as they come.

I’m bisexual,” she replied.

When another fan asked Grimes if she had just come out, she responded: “Yea, pretty sure I did.”

In a later tweet, Grimes explained that she came to terms with her sexuality by talking about it with others.

“Honestly feel stupid I didn’t come to the conclusion sooner,” she added.

Grimes is not the first actor to throw her hat into the ring to play Batwoman. Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz and WWE wrestler Sonya Deville have already expressed interest in taking on the role.

Ruby Rose took on the highly-coveted role for the first season, but she announced last week that her time on the show had come to an end.

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose said in a statement released last week.

“This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

The show’s producers have indicated that they will cast an LGBT+ actor to take on the role next.

A statement from production companies Berlanti Productions and WBTV said: “Warner Bros Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best.

“The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman‘s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

There has been much speculation as to why Rose has left the series, with many speculating that an on-set injury during the first season convinced her to bow out.

An inside source told TVLine last week that the actor’s departure was like a “break-up” and said it “wasn’t 100 per cent her decision”.

“She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No,” the source said.

“So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned if they parted ways.

“It just wasn’t a good fit.”
