Ivanka Trump called for ‘more love’ in a limp and tepid Pride Month message and it backfired spectacularly
Ivanka Trump managed to celebrate LGBT+ Pride Month all without mentioning the words “gay, lesbian, bisexual” or “trans” and even saved crucial Twitter real estate by skipping one of the six colours of the rainbow.
The eldest daughter and senior adviser of Donald Trump is more active than the US president when it comes to showing support for the community, but critics sought to shut her down Monday evening (June 1) after this year’s lofty message.
Ivanka foppishly tweeted, “Less hate, more love!”, alongside five heart emojis of the colours the standard six-tripe rainbow.
We’re honestly not sure why blue is missing, but we imagine it’s not exactly the Trump family’s favourite colour right now.
Ivanka Trump flimsily flashes support for Pride Month while her father remains silent.
The surreal addition of a low-resolution text art pulled from Tumblr had LGBT+ Twitter users spiralling into a stumped outrage, no doubt heightened by Donald’s own silence on Pride which has come to, in part, define his presidency’s hollow relationship to the queer communities.
Countless users lit into Ivanka’s gimcrack display of solidarity, touching off the surging rates of anger directed towards the Trump administration’s bungled handlings of the Black Lives Matter resistance seizing the States.
Understandably, Ivanka’s mentions were a hotbed of memes, gifs and a lot of capital letters.
Donald Trump has only recognised Pride Month once in his four yearslong presidency.
For his first two years in office, there was only silence.
Donald Trump broke his silence in 2019 to announce his administration’s “global campaign to decriminalise homosexuality”. Yet critics immediately seized on how Trump has done more to dismantle LGBT+ rights in the nation than improve.
It was all meant to be different. Many saw Donald as a transformative alternative for his comparatively moderate stance on equal marriage in a crowded field of Republicans who opposed it.
During Donald’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in 2016, he thundered that, if elected: “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBT+ citizens from the violence and oppression of a foreign ideology.”
Yet, with each coming year of his administration, Trump’s amnesiac approach to carrying out his pledge has seen him swerve from criticism.
LGBT+ people and advocates have witnessed Donald steeply rollback LGBT+ rights across social and political arenas, captured by his ban of trans people serving in the military.
Moreover, hate crime rates reached a decade high during Donald’s tenure as president, and his administration was accused of gouging HIV/AIDS funding to pay for child migrant detention.
His administration also considered ways to legally erase trans people and has been linked to numerous anti-LGBT+ hate groups.
Amidst all of this, there is an epidemic of murders of trans people – particularly trans women of colour – but the Trump administration does not seem to care.
