Cara Delevingne says she identifies as pansexual: ‘Whether it’s they or he or she, I fall in love with the person’

Cara Delevingne has come out as pansexual, saying: “I fall in love with the person — and that’s that.”
In an interview with Variety, as the magazine’s Pride issue cover star, the supermodel and Carnival Row actor explained: “I always will remain, I think, pansexual.
“However one defines themselves, whether it’s ‘they’ or ‘he’ or ‘she’, I fall in love with the person — and that’s that. I’m attracted to the person.”
Delevingne also discussed her fluid relationship with gender, adding: “The thing is with me, I change a lot. I feel different all the time.
“Some days, I feel more womanly. Some days, I feel more like a man.”
Cara Delevingne had to deal with internalised homophobia.
She described her upbringing in “an old-fashioned, repressed English family”, which she said made accepting herself harder.
Delevingne said: “I used the word ‘gay’ to describe things which were s**t all the time: ‘That’s so f**king gay of you, man.’
“Everyone used to talk about: ‘Oh, my God, imagine going down on a woman.’ I’d be like: ‘That’s disgusting.’
“I think that came from the fact that I just didn’t want to admit who I was. I didn’t want to upset my family.
“I was deeply unhappy and depressed. When you don’t accept a part of yourself or love yourself, it’s like you’re not there, almost.”

She said when she finally came out to her father at 18, after her first relationship with a woman ended, he took it better than she could have expected: “I remember one day, I was so upset because I was heartbroken… I screamed at him: ‘I’m f**king heartbroken.’
“I ran downstairs. I remember he gave me a hug, and I started crying so much. I said: ‘She broke my heart.’
“I thought at the moment, he might kick me out. I was that scared, I was honestly terrified.
“And he was like: ‘She isn’t worth the energy. You deserve to be loved’.”
On what Pride means to her, Delevingne said: “Pride to me is a sense of something that I never really had as a kid. A sense of pride is like a sense of belonging, a family outside your family, a place where you don’t have to apologise or feel ashamed.”

Last month, Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson split after almost two years together.
The supermodel and the Pretty Little Liars actor were first photographed kissing in August 2018 but remained tight-lipped on whether or not they were dating for almost a year.
They finally confirmed their relationship in Pride month, June 2019, when they shared a video of themselves kissing online. A month earlier, they’d been pictured carrying a leather sex bench into their LA home.
