Police in Chicago have said they are launching an investigation into the “derogatory conduct” of an officer who called a Black Lives Matter protester a “faggot”.
LGBT+ people in the city were outraged last week when a video was posted to Instagram of a police officer shouting at a protester: “B**ch! Wait ’till I turn my back, you f**king faggot!”
Days after the incident, the Chicago Police Department issued a statement claiming that the officer’s conduct was “inexcusable”.
“The Chicago Police Department strives to treat all individuals our officers encounter with respect,” the statement said.
The Chicago Police Department has opened an investigation after an officer called a Black Lives Matter protester a ‘faggot’.
“Any derogatory conduct is inexcusable and has no place in the department.
“We do not tolerate this kind of behaviour, which is why we have opened an investigation into this incident and will take appropriate disciplinary action immediately as we work to identify the officer involved.”
The police department urged anyone who has been mistreated by a Chicago police officer to report the incidents.

In the video shared to social media, the police officer shouted abuse at protesters after a projectile was thrown.
Sharing the clip on Twitter, Chicago drag queen Kim Passable wrote: “White gays who’ve been silent so far… if it takes you till this to be angry, shame on you, but hey come join.”
Another Twitter user wrote: “I would like the cop defending Twitter gays who just logged on to defend brunch over human life to see this a million times.”

People across the world are protesting following the brutal killing of Black man George Floyd on May 25 by a white police officer.
In viral footage from the incident, police officer Derek Chauvin can be seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes.
Floyd later died after telling Chauvin that he could not breathe.
Protesters have come out in force to object to police brutality and to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
