Beautiful condom ad starring gay YouTube couple airs in Poland amid a tidal wave of homophobic hate
A Durex condom advert featuring a same-sex couple is airing in Poland amid a wave of homophobia in the country.
The condom ad features couples enjoying erotically-charged moments together. While most of the couples in the ad are straight, it also features two men – who are seen shaving and sharing a kiss in their bathroom.
The ad rapidly cuts between the couples – making the clear statement that love is, well, universal.
Durex Poland said: “Be loud in bed – talk loudly about your needs. With the Durex Invisible line, you can choose condoms that are perfectly matched to them: Super-thin, extra lubricated, fitted or extra large.”
Durex ad comes amid a wave of anti-LGBT+ hatred in Poland.
The two men featured in the ad are real-life couple Jakub and Dawid Mycek-Kwieciński, who are well-known gay Polish YouTubers.
While it might not be a particularly remarkable advert elsewhere, there is plenty of significance of the ad airing in Poland, which has seen a surge in public homophobia and nationalist rhetoric in the past few years.
As part of the politically-driven attack on LGBT+ people led by the ruling Law and Justice Party, nearly 100 Polish municipal or local governments have proclaimed themselves zones “free from LGBT+ ideology” and opposing gay “propaganda” – covering nearly a third of the country.
The European Parliament passed a resolution that strongly condemned the concept of LGBT-free zones in December, noting that they are “part of a broader context of attacks against the LGBT+ community in Poland, which include growing hate speech by public and elected officials and public media, as well as attacks and bans on Pride marches”.
The ad is also airing in Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania – all of which have also faced their own battles with homophobia.
People love the new condom advert for busting taboos about sex and gay couples.
Campaigners have hailed the ad as a “historic moment in Polish TV”.
One YouTube commenter wrote: “Sex is a very important part of any relationship and it shouldn’t be ignored.
“The sphere of eroticism, passion and partnership brings two people in love together, which is why I think we should talk about sex. Durex, great advert.”
Another quipped: “You went over the top with all this heterosexual propaganda! Three hetero pairs and only one homo? I do not like to look at kissing straight couples, I felt sick because of this… why do you want to push this propaganda everywhere!?”
One user added: “Communication in sex is very important. I am glad that we are not enforcing stigma about this.”
Durex replied: “We believe that starting from this, we will change for the better, not only the physical sphere, but also the mental and emotional sphere of many relationships.”
