Homophobes in Poland are furious after LGBT+ activists put a “vagina-shaped halo” on the Virgin Mary at a pro-equality demonstration.
A queer activist in Gdansk, Poland, sparked outrage among counter protesters at a demonstration on Saturday (12 September) when she turned up with a heart shaped placard with a vagina at its centre. Homophobic protesters at the event said the placard was “imitating” the Virgin Mary.
The pro-LGBT+ demonstration was attended by Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, mayor of Gdansk, along with other queer people and activists in the city.
Dulkiewicz spoke about the importance of diversity at the rally, telling the gathered crowd that the city has “a place for everyone”.
But various anti-LGBT+ protesters turned up at the demonstration to voice their opposition to queer rights in the country, which has seen a dangerous rise in homophobia and transphobia in recent months.
Counter protesters accused LGBT+ activists at the demonstration of being “aggressive” in their pursuit of equality.
Tensions rose when a counter protester tried to grab the queer activist’s Virgin Mary “vagina shaped halo” placard. Police were forced to intervene, with local reports indicating the man will face court action.

Law and Justice MEP Dominik Traczynski claimed in an interview with wpolityce.pl that the LGBT+ community in Poland is trying to incite violence.
“LGBT+ activists are counting on people losing their tempter to create violent conflict in order for these activists to claim that they are being persecuted and oppressed,” he said.
He claimed that Polish courts favour “an ideological and liberal agenda” and called for judicial reform.
Law and Justice councillors in the city also lambasted the city’s mayor for attending the pro-LGBT+ demonstration. In a joint statement, councillors hit out LGBT+ activists for trying to “reconstruct cultural norms”.
Members of Poland’s right-wing, anti-LGBT+ party were joined at counter protests by the staunchly homophobic All Polish Youth group, which has spent decades fighting against any progress on queer rights.
The backlash comes after months of rising anti-LGBT+ sentiment in Poland.
Earlier in 2020, it was revealed that numerous towns across the country had declared themselves “LGBT-free zones”.
Polish president Andrzej Duda later faced sustained backlash from LGBT+ people in the country the he hinged much of his re-election campaign on his harsh opposition to LGBT+ rights.
In a “family charter” published ahead of the election, Duda pledged to “prohibit the propagation” of LGBT+ “ideology” in public institutions and “defend the institution of marriage” as defined as a “relationship between a woman and a man”.
Duda also proposed an amendment to Poland’s constitution that would ban same-sex couples from adopting children.
