Kristen Stewart’s lesbian Christmas rom-com is heading straight to streaming. Here’s when you’ll be able to watch it
Kristen Stewart’s upcoming lesbian Christmas rom-com Happiest Season will be skipping theatres, instead heading straight to streaming.
Happiest Season, which also stars Mackenzie Davis and Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, is the latest film forced to bypass cinemas and premiere digitally due to the pandemic.
In what can only be described as a Christmas miracle, the family flick will be available to stream via Hulu in the US from November 25.
Producers Sony and eOne are yet to finalise plans for the rest of the world, and teased that some countries may still receive the film as a theatrical release.
Clea DuVall, who directs from a script she wrote with Mary Holland, expressed her gratitude to Hulu for “providing a home Happiest Season“.
“I’ll forever cherish my journey with Sony Pictures who felt just as strongly as I did about the value of bringing the first major LGBTQ+ holiday rom-com to audiences,” she said in a statement.
“I’m hopeful that this universal story, told through a unique lens, will join the long list of holiday classics that continue to bring all of us so much joy and happiness.”
Happiest Season is the gay Christmas rom-com Kristen Stewart has been waiting for her entire life.
The eagerly-anticipated movie focuses on a young woman, Abby (Kristen Stewart), who plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) while attending her annual family holiday celebration – where she finds out that her girlfriend is not yet out to her conservative parents.
DuVall previously told People: “I’m a huge fan of Christmas movies, but I had never seen my story represented.”
She went on to explain that she wanted the opportunity to tell “a universal story in a new perspective”.
Stewart added: “I think I’ve wished to see a gay Christmas rom-com my whole life. I’m so happy and proud of Clea for bringing this into the world.”
The film also stars Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Victor Garber and Mary Steenburgen.
