Meryl Streep loudly demands LGBT+ rights in glittering first trailer for Ryan Murphy’s lesbian musical epic The Prom

The Prom trailer has finally been unleashed by Netflix, and to say that we’re excited would be an understatement.
The new adaptation of the Broadway musical, directed by legendary queer creator Ryan Murphy, revolves around a group of out-of-work actors who decide to come to the aid of a lesbian high-school student who is denied the chance to bring a female date to her prom.
In the trailer, Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) announces: “We have come to this community on behalf of a young girl,” referring to student Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman).
The four actors travel to the small Midwestern town of Edgewater, Indiana, after seeing a news report about Emma’s experience and attempt to win her the chance to bring her girlfriend to the prom.
But their actions are not exactly selfless – Dee Dee is hopeful that her goodwill could help kickstart her career and undo the public perception that she is a diva.

Judging by the The Prom’s trailer, it looks like Meryl Streep will be unleashing a truly iconic performance, bringing some much-needed camp excess to this hellscape of a year.
The film, which also stars Andrew Rannels, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Tracey Ullman and, eh… James Cordon, looks like it will be the festive, celebratory musical extravaganza we all so desperately need in 2020.
The Prom debuted in Atlanta in 2016 before it moved to Broadway in 2018. It opened to critical acclaim, and the following year, Murphy announced that he would be adapting the musical for Netflix.
The film’s cast was announced in June 2019, and quickly sent queer fans into a frenzy at the thoughts of true Hollywood icons assembling to fight for LGBT+ rights on screen.
In September, Murphy announced that filming had wrapped despite the coronavirus pandemic. He heaped praise on the cast, saying they “buckled up and finished shooting during COVID so we could give everybody an inspirational aspirations story that we all need right now”.
The Prom will be released on Netflix December 11.
