Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair have recreated their iconic Cruel Intentions kiss with a very 2020-themed twist.

Cruel Intentions was released in 1999 and became an immediate classic for queer teenagers as Kathryn (Gellar) and Cecile (Blair) shared a passionate, steamy kiss.

More than 20 years on, the pair have recreated the famous scene in a pre-recorded video broadcast at the MTV Movie and TV Awards: Greatest of All Time, which aired on Sunday (6 December).

Gellar and Blair addressed viewers at home after their famous scene was awarded the Greatest of All Time: Legendary Lip Lock award.

Cruel Intentions kiss helped queer people ‘realise’ their sexuality

“I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value, but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realise certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are,” Blair said in the video.

Gellar added: “It also presented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic toward acceptance in pop culture. And also it was super hot.”

“So as a special thanks, we’d like to recreate it right here, for you guys,” Blair said, before the stars lean in across a table to share a kiss.

But their steamy moment is quickly cut short as they realise they are separated by a glass screen due to COVID-19, with the stars trying to recreate their passionate scene while separated from each other.

Closing out the video, Gellar said: “Stay safe MTV, and 2020: end soon.”

Gellar and Blair have remained close friends in the years since their kiss in Cruel Intentions set pulses racing.

In June, Gellar marked Blair’s birthday by sharing a throwback picture of them them kissing on stage after they were handed the “Best Kiss” award at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards.

“Since I will have to stay six feet away from you today (and wear a mask) this will be as close as I get to giving you a birthday kiss,” Gellar wrote.

Days later, Gellar shared a snap of herself and Blair sharing a kiss, with Gellar wearing a face mask, and captioned it: “I got my kiss.”
