Elton John won’t be dropping another album anytime soon: ‘I have no idea what the f**k I’m going to do next’
Elton John has revealed he’s holding off on releasing another record, saying rather matter-of-factly: “I have no idea what the f**k I’m going to do next, and that feels great.”
Same, John. Same.
In an interview for Record Collector magazine, the British singer-songwriter explained that, amid the coronavirus pandemic grinding life to a standstill, including derailing his farewell tour, music-making has ranked low in his to-do list.
“I just don’t think this is a time for me to think about recording,” he said.
“I’m a dad and I love being a dad. I will get in the mood to record again – and I’ll get in the mood to write.
“But no one needs another Elton John record out at the moment.”
Elton John’s longtime collaborators are pleading with him to make music again
It comes after longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin said he’d been trying to cajole John into releasing more music, noting he’d supplied him “close to 16 or 18” lyric ideas, according to UCR.
“I would love to see him start to do some work,” said Taupin who has co-written an array of John’s hits such as “Rocket Man” and “Tiny Dancer”.
“As I say, I continually encourage him to do so.
Taupin admitted that John’s priorities, for the time, being are with husband David Furnish and nine-year-old Zachary and seven-year-old Elijah.
“When he does decide to put digits to piano, I think we might come up with something very special,” he explained.
“Being that he’s not going to hit the road potentially until the end of next year, that gives him plenty of time.”
He added: “I would love to see him start to do some work.
“As I say, I continually encourage him to do so. How we would do it, I’m not sure. I’ve got some ideas in my head that he might be interested in.
“But I really, really would love to get back on track and back in the game.”
John’s last studio album was 2016’s Wonderful Crazy Night, but he has dipped back in recent years with a few collaborations, including the aggressively gay duet with Lady Gaga for “Sine From Above”.
