Marvel tried to reveal Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord as bisexual years ago with a mysterious new love interest

Marvel Comics revealed this week that star-lord Peter Quill is bisexual, but it turns out this has been in the works for years.

Kris Anka, who drew the art for Chip Zdarsky’s Star-Lord series, revealed they designed a male love interest for Quill in 2016.

Anka tweeted: “If the series had gone long enough we actually developed and designed a character we were gonna try to make a love interest for Peter.”

However, the series ended up being cancelled after eight issues, so the love interest was never introduced.

Marvel Comics are yet to confirm whether his bisexuality will be explored in the cinematic universe, where he is played by Chris Pratt.

In previous Guardians of the Galaxy films, Quill is in love with Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana.

Star-Lord was assumed dead after Guardians of the Galaxy #2 but it is revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy #9 that he is still alive – he just fell into a parallel universe called Morinus, a city-state built on the back of a giant turtle. Here, he entered a polyamorous relationship with Aradia and Mors.

He holds back for his first decade on Morinus, hoping to return to Gamora. When he believes he will never be able to return home, he enters into the relationship with Aradia and Mors.

The relationship lasts over 130 years and Guardians of the Galaxy #9 shows Aradia pregnant. There is later dialogue about “Rocky”, who is assumed to be the child.

It’s not just Star-Lord being bisexual – Marvel Comics has long included LGBT+ storylines

Notably, Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame is bisexual in the canon. She is played on screen by Tessa Thompson, who is also bisexual.

Thompson previously said: “I think when we’re living in a robust time where we want to be able to say to people that they can love who they want to love, they can be who they want to be, it’s perfect to include those narratives inside of this world.”

Guardians of the Galaxy #10 is due to be released in January.
