The Golden Girls is finally coming to Disney Plus – and soon
The Golden Girls is finally coming to Disney Plus and maybe we shouldn’t write off 2021 just yet.
At the European launch for the new Disney Plus channel, Star, it was confirmed that the four wisecracking housemates – Sophia, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose – will be landing on the streamer later this year.
We can certainly thank Disney Plus for being a friend for this one.
Disney Plus EMEA senior vice president Luke Bradley-Jones said he was “really excited” and had been “working hard” on bringing the beloved sitcom to the streamer.
“I can’t give you the exact date, but coming this summer you’ll have every season of The Golden Girls, every ever episode of The Golden Girls, available on Disney Plus,” he added.
The Golden Girls boasted a legendary line-up of acting veterans – Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Betty White and Estelle Getty – and told a simple story.
When it premiered in 1985, viewers were immediately gripped by the lives of four single women ‘of a certain age’ living together in sun-splashed Miami, Florida: sarcastic divorcee Dorothy (Arthur), her spitfire mother Sophia (Getty), naive sweetheart Rose (White) and amorous Southern belle Blanche (McClanahan).
With rosy rejoinders and camp sass, the warm comedy showed that a series about age can be ageless across its 180 episodes run.
While the show was cosy in its story-telling, it at times dipped into important material, such as being gay and living with HIV, which gained it a passionate LGBT+ fanbase.
All four lead actors went onto score an Emmy Award each for their performances.
The Disney Plus announcement comes ahead of Star, a new strand of grown-up content on the platform set to launch 23 February.
Star will be the rather belated home of Love, Victor, the critically-acclaimed Love, Simon spin-off, for British audiences.
Viewers can sign up to Disney Plus for £5.99 per month or £59.99 per year until 23 February, when the subscription prices will increase. To find out more and sign up go to disneyplus.com.
