Demi Lovato thinks gender reveal parties are transphobic

Demi Lovato thinks gender reveal parties are transphobic, and that the sometimes catastrophic events “fuel the mistreatment of all people”.
Lovato shared a graphic by gender non-conforming author, performance artist and activist Alok Vaid-Menon to her Instagram account Thursday (25 February).
Quoting Vaid-Menon, she shared: “This is not about being politically correct, it’s about being correct.
“The refusal to acknowledge this stems from a misunderstanding of what transphobia is.
“Transphobia is not just prejudice or violence against an individual trans person, it is a belief system that presumes non-trans people to be more ‘natural’ than trans people. Only individual people can self determine their gender.”

The quote accompanied a graphic explaining how gender reveal parties reinforce transphobia, which read in part: “Gender reveals are based on the illusion that genitals = gender and that there are only two options: ‘Boy or girl.’
“This definition erases the fact that there are boys with vaginas and girls with penises and that there are people who are neither boys nor girls.”
Queer artist Demi Lovato is a staunch trans ally.
Presenting the GLAAD media awards in 2020, Demi Lovato pledged to fight for trans youth amid the current “crazy” political climate.
The “Sober” hitmaker said before introducing Shea Diamond onto the virtual stage: “It’s never been more important to celebrate the acceleration of acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ community especially trans people of colour who face outrageous discrimination and danger.
“To all the trans youth, I want to make sure that you know that you matter.
“I know things are crazy hard right now and you may not have your usual support system around you.
“But don’t let anyone especially our government fool you into thinking you are anything less than perfect and meant to be.
“Be proud of who you are. Keep your voices loud and strong and know that we are fighting for you.”
