Mariah Carey sued by brother for ’emotional anguish’ over ‘vicious fight’ claim

Mariah Carey is being sued by her brother for “emotional anguish” after her memoir claimed that he and his father had a “vicious fight”.
Morgan Carey is suing his younger sister after he suffered “extreme mental anguish” and “serious damage to his reputation” as a result of her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
In his lawsuit, Morgan asks for unspecified damages, and seeks a “judicial determination that many of the passages [in the memoir]… are false and defamatory”, according to The Guardian.
In the book, Mariah claimed that Morgan and his father had to be pulled apart by 12 police officers after they had a fight.
“I witnessed the possibility that a member of my family could brutally die in front of my eyes,” Mariah wrote in the book.
Morgan said the struggle “never happened” and accused Mariah of fabricating “a cliched and racially charged portrayal of two Black males”.
Mariah also accused her brother of physically abusing their mother in the memoir, a claim he has said is a “false and defamatory lie”.
Morgan’s lawsuit also hits out at the singer for claiming that he tried to extort money from her after she shot to fame.
“[Morgan] brings this action more in sorrow and disappointment in his sister’s betrayals and malicious falsehoods than in anger at them,” the lawsuit reads.
The lawsuit also names Michaela Angela Davis, the book’s co-writer, publisher Macmillan and imprint Andy Cohen Books as co-defendants.

The news comes just weeks after Alison Carey, Mariah’s sister, sued the star over claims in her memoir that Alison drugged and abused the singer when she was a child.
Mariah described her upbringing, relationships, career and struggled with her biracial identity in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, released in 2020.
One of the more shocking claims in the book was that her sister Alison, who is eight years older than her, drugged and abused her.
In a chapter on their relationship titled “Dandelion Tea”, Mariah wrote: “When I was 12 years old, my sister drugged me with Valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, inflicted me with third-degree burns, and tried to sell me out to a pimp.”
She continued: “She threw boiling hot tea on me… my back was splattered with third-degree burns.
“I couldn’t recognise it as mine. She burned my back and my trust. Any faint hope I’d held up to that point of having a big sister became scorched earth.”
Alison Carey subsequently sued her sister for $1.25 million (£916,000) in damages for “the infliction of immense emotional distress caused by defendant’s heartless, vicious, vindicate, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation”, according to Variety.
