Marvel boss Kevin Feige teases the arrival of the super-queer Young Avengers
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has teased that fans could be seeing more of the Young Avengers – including gay superhero Wiccan – in upcoming projects.
Young Avengers member Wiccan made his MCU in the acclaimed WandaVision, which told the story of his mother, the Scarlet Witch, creating her own sitcom reality while grieving his father, Vision. In the comics, Billy grows up to marry his boyfriend Hulking (Theodore “Teddy” Altman), another member of the team.
The full Young Avengers team is known for its diversity – in 2014 the Young Avengers comic series won a GLAAD award for its LGBT+ representation
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige addressed questions about the heroes appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He gave the publication a very cryptic and teasing answer – of course.
“As a comic fan, anything in the comics is always our inspiration and our guide point,” Feige said. “How those things come together and in what shape, it’s always subverting expectations, it’s always half the fun as meeting them.”
He promised that “Phase 4” – the upcoming slew of Marvel shows and films that are set to be released between 2021 and 2023 – will introduce “all sorts of new types of characters with the potential being endless”. Feige added “new performers” and “new actors” are coming in to add to “part of a bigger universe”.
“I’m happy to say everybody that’s here, certainly where I’m sitting now, is doing amazing work and [I] can’t wait to show them the world,” Feige said.
A number of Young Avengers have already been confirmed for the MCU.
America Chavez, a queer Latina teenage superhero with lesbian parents who is sometimes referred to as Miss America, will be introduced into the MCU in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, played by Xochitl Gomez.
Another member, Kate Bishop, who will be portrayed by Hailee Steinfield, will appear in the Disney Plus series Hawkeye.
There are whispers that Eli Bradley will appear in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Feige spoke to EW about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is currently streaming on Disney Plus
