Caitlyn Jenner ‘exploring’ run for governor of California ‘with help from ex-Trump staffer’
Caitlyn Jenner is “actively exploring” running for governor of California, according to reports.
Multiple sources told Axios that Jenner is seriously considering a run for governor of California against incumbent Gavin Newsom. Newsom faces a possible recall election after being heavily criticised for his immigration and tax policies as well as his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
Axios reported Republican-leaning Jenner has met with GOP fundraiser Caroline Wren, who previously worked at Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee for Trump‘s 2020 campaign.
The Associated Press reported that Wren had links to Women for America First, which initially organised the 6 January Washington rally that spawned the deadly assault on the US Capitol. Wren was named as a “VIP Advisor” on an attachment to the permit that Women for America First provided to the agency.
Jenner reportedly met Wren through her work with the American Unity Fund, which is a Republican nonprofit group focused on LGBT+ issues.
Caitlyn Jenner used to be a Trump supporter and even voted for him in the 2016 election, but she heavily criticised him in 2018. She said she was wrong to think he would help transgender people as president.
Jenner told radio host John Catsimatidis in 2017 that she might have a future in politics. She revealed that she had considered a run for Senate as she has been heavily involved in LGBT+ activism and politics.
In February 2021, there were rumours that Jenner might enter into the run to become California’s next governor. But Jenner’s manager Sophia Hutchins made it clear that the reality TV star wasn’t going to start her political career at that time.
She said: “Caitlyn is not running for governor, has never considered running for governor and is very happy doing the work that she is doing to promote LGBT rights and spending time with her 18 grandchildren and 10 children.”
If Newsom were to be recalled, he would be just the third governor to be recalled in US history. California Democrat Gray Davis was the second, in 2003, when he was replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is also a Republican.
PinkNews contacted Caitlyn Jenner for comment on the governor rumours.
